The Scope of Professionalisation of Research Managers from an International Perspective
Dr. Simon Kerridge
Simon has been a research manager and administrator for over 30 years, now an independent research consultant he previously led the research office at the Universities of Kent and Sunderland.
He has a passion for research management and administration (RMA) as a profession and leads the INORMS (International Network of Research Management Societies) RAAAP (Research Administration as a Profession) Task Force that is collecting longitudinal data about the profession. He was given the 2022 Innovation Award from CARA the Canadian Association of Research Administrators for his leadership on RAAAP. The RAAAP results also play a major role in The Emerald Handbook of Research Management and Administration Around the World (2023) open access book.
Simon sits on a number of RMA related committees and groups including being a board member for EARMA the European association. He is also co-chair of the NISO Standing Committee for CRediT the contributor role taxonomy for journal article authorship. Simon is an advisor on the NCURA funded Research Administration Professional IDentity Values Scale (RAPIDS) which has recently developed a self-assessment tool for research managers.
He was a panel advisor for Research England as part of the UK 2021 Research Excellence Framework, supporting the Social Sciences assessment panel.
Simon is managing editor of the Journal of Research Management and Administration (JoRMA) and has taught on the Johns Hopkins’ masters in research administration and. He was an author of Metric Tide report and holds a professional doctorate in Electronic Research Administration.

Elizabeth Batchilly is a research management professional and the current Head of Governance and Research Support services at Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She holds an MSc in Project Management from the University of Salford, UK and various training certificates in research management and research integrity. She has over 12 years experience in research management which spans from pre-award to post-award and performance management (KPIs and performance reporting). Adopting a culture of excellence is her mantra in the workplace.
She is an expert in developing procedures and work processes aimed at maximizing research output, ensure good governance practices without undue delays. She is experienced in managing multi-disciplinary teams and projects in resource constraint settings. Internationally exposed and apt in dealing with challenging situations and managing project performance. She is an expert in setting the strategic direction for research management offices for donor scoping, grants application and interaction with online grant application systems, research contracts, grants management, project management, and building networks. Her approach to research management is system-centred which focuses on building and harmonizing internal systems to break silos in the workplace, strengthen central research support functions to be focused on adding value to the scientific output of an institution.

Mr Ricky Asante studied computer engineering in the university but later diverted into studying psychology and counselling at the college of counselling and psychology of the Trinity Theological Semimary, after he discovered his true passion.
He went on to study Mental Health Wellness at the College of Bath in the United Kingdom and Child Psychology at Oxford University. He has been trained in conflict analysis and peace mediation by the United States Institute of Peace. He is certified by Harvard University in Early Childhood Development-Global strategies for implementation. He is accredited by UNICEF in Leadership for planning & decision-making with adolescents, and also by the United Nations Institute for Training & Research in Children & Climate change.
Ricky is practising in conflict analysis and peace mediation in the areas of Mental Health Wellness (stress, anxiety, depression, bipolar etc), Early Childhood Development,and Relationship & Family Life.

Beatrice Sakyibea Biney-Nyamekye (Research Management Professional – RMP), has over 11+ years experience supporting researchers in a university setting pursue funding for research and capacity building initiatives. Her work spans the research life cycle but has predominantly focused on the pre-award processes including finding funding for research, providing expert advice to researchers on responding to funding opportunity announcements and supporting the researchers to develop research proposals applications and submit applications for funding.
She has specialist knowledge of the research lifecycle and experience with strategic research funding initiatives gathered from the departmental and central level grants management and she has contributed immensely to grants management capacity building programmes in the University of Ghana and beyond. Beatrice is the Senior Research Development Officer, responsible for research and grants management in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, University of Ghana. She supervises the Grant Management Office at the College of Basic and Applied Sciences.

LeShawndra Price, Ph.D., Director of the Office of Research Training and Special Programs (ORTSP) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is a leading expert in the fields of health equity, global health, and implementation science, with more than 20 years of experience at the NIH. Dr. Price provides oversight for the NIAID Global Infectious Disease Research Administration Award for Low- and Middle-Income Country Institutions (G11), which provides advanced training for senior research administrators in low- and middle-income countries to develop institutional capacity to conduct and support NIAID and NIH research. Dr. Price also leads NIAID’s Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs and research training programs to develop the next generation of researchers and physician scientists within NIAID’s mission areas.
