Dr <\/span>Charmaine Williamson<\/span> has worked for<\/span> twenty-eight<\/span> years in various domains of research management. <\/span>Her doctorate focused on pre-and post-funding strategies, at a macro policy level, for development <\/span>assistance <\/span>between South Africa and the EU. <\/span><\/p>

After teaching and lecturing, she commenced research management, in 1998, in the first democratic parliamentary sector of South Africa <\/span>and focused on collaborations and <\/span>connections with Higher Education Institutions<\/span> (HEIs)<\/span> in South Africa and abroad<\/span> to grow evidence-based policy. From there, h<\/span>er experience of setting up <\/span>research management<\/span>, from a <\/span>close-to-<\/span>zero base to high performing<\/span> programmes<\/span>, led to her being contracted by the<\/span>National Treasury and the<\/span> Presidency of<\/span> her country,<\/span> South Africa<\/span>,<\/span> and later at the Pan African Parliament (PAP)<\/span> to be a Technical Advisor<\/span> on researcher development and management<\/span>.<\/span> Again, her role was to <\/span>facilitate strategies between government and <\/span>HEIs <\/span>in terms of refining <\/span>research management skills<\/span> and to build collaborations for better policy and HEI practice<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>

Currently, she covers many of the <\/span>p<\/span>rofessional <\/span>c<\/span>ompetency<\/span> and transferable skill<\/span> domains of the SARIMA Professional Competency Framework (PCF)<\/span> (2016). She works with HEI<\/span> and non- governmental organisations<\/span>. Her work has taken her to Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Mozambique<\/span> and <\/span>Tanzania covering different domains of research management: In Ghana, she worked with KNUST<\/span> around grants;<\/span> in Nigeria, she<\/span> still<\/span> works for the Business School of Netherlands, in various sites<\/span> & online<\/span>,<\/span> in internationalisation;<\/span> in Ethiopia, she worked on the <\/span>B<\/span>ilateral <\/span>A<\/span>greement between SA and Ethiopia around researcher development<\/span>, strengthening doctoral and supervisory capacities<\/span> and international collaborations. In Mozambique and Tanzania, she worked on PhD programmes as part of researcher development.<\/span> She has also worked internationally on research co-ordination in China, India, the Netherlands<\/span>, Ireland, Denmark. With a base in South Africa and as <\/span>a Permanent Resident of Canada<\/span>,<\/span> she liaises <\/span>with Canadian HEIs to promote partnerships with South Africa.<\/span><\/p>

Charmaine <\/span>also has managed the Research Management Portfolio for <\/span>the Southern African Research Management and Innovation Association<\/span> (SARIMA)<\/span> and done a number of medium-term projects with SARIMA including research management training and being co-PI on the PCF. In this regard, she co-published five articles, one which won the international Rod Rose Award for best paper, awarded towards the end of 2025. <\/span>Charmaine\u2019s university affiliation is with U<\/span>niversity of South Africa<\/span> as a contract academic<\/span>. She trains academic staff and post-graduate students, as well as supervis<\/span>es<\/span> her own PhD students.<\/span> She <\/span>continues to present papers at conferences and universities, <\/span>and<\/span> has<\/span> a number of published articles, which attempt to capture the \u2018third space\u2019 between academia and research management professional<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mrs. Nana Oye Akuffo\u00a0is the Senior Research Development Officer and Head of the College of Health Grants Office at the University of Ghana. She has served the University for over twenty years in grants management and project coordination. In addition, she is the Assistant General Secretary of the West Africa Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA).<\/p>

After earning a Master\u2019s degree in Administration from Central University College, she undertook professional training with grants administrators at Yale University\u2019s Office for Sponsored Research and the Office of Sponsored Research at the Morehouse School of Medicine. At the University of Ghana, she works closely with senior faculty to oversee research development, project implementation, and closure, while also supporting students and staff through training opportunities and active involvement in research.<\/p>

She established the Office of \u00a0Research Support at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and was instrumental in establishing the Research Innovation Directorate at the University of Ghana, both of which were designed to streamline and strengthen grants administration at the institution.<\/p>

Her training spans key areas such as NIH Grant Fundamentals, Research Law, Research Administration and Management, Leadership, Financial Management, and both Pre- and Post-Award processes.<\/p>

Her professional experience includes collaborations with international agencies such as NIH, WHO, DANIDA, the EU, and USAID. She has also trained and mentored research administrators locally and internationally. As a resource person, she has supported the establishment of so many research offices in Ghana and across Africa.<\/p>

In 2018, she became the inaugural recipient of the Research Administrators Mobility Program (RAMP) Scholarship from SRAI, which enabled her to undertake in-house training at Yale University\u2019s Office of Sponsored Projects to gain deeper insights into the business operations and processes of sponsored research. She is also a two-time recipient of NIH-funded grants for capacity building of research administrators in Ghana and the wider West African subregion.<\/p>

Mrs. Akuffo has served as a reviewer for the Society of Research Administrators International (SRAI) Annual Meeting in 2021 and, in 2024, was inducted into the distinguished faculty of SRAI. Florence Antwiwaah Aboh is a Senior Assistant Registrar in charge of Research and Innovation at the Office of Research, Innovation and Consultancy, University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, Ghana. Her skills include research management and coaching students to develop innovative ideas for commercialisation with the required entrepreneurial acumen to succeed. She is also involved in research dissemination and visibility.<\/p>

She serves as a liaison between her institution’s grant holders and funders. Her dealings with external funding agencies include the National Institutes of Health, DANIDA, Wellcome Trust, the European Union and the National Science Foundation. With over 18 years of experience in the research management space, she has contributed to enhancing the research and grant capacity of Faculty members in her institution and other institutions in Ghana. In addition, she promotes collaborations and partnerships between the University and industry players in the mining and related industries and sits on panels to discuss research and innovation development.<\/p>

She holds a Master of Business Administration from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, Kumasi and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Management option from the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana. Mrs Aboh has undergone training in grant management at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, University of Ibadan, Nigeria and Aarhus University, Denmark. \u00a0<\/p>

Diana Adobea Owusu Antwi is a Senior Research Development Officer at the Research and Innovation Directorate, University of Ghana. She oversees the University’s intellectual property and technology transfer enterprise and plays a key role in facilitating the translation of research and innovations into practical applications for the benefit of society. Diana is also experienced in designing and delivering educational and training programmes aimed at creating and enhancing understanding of intellectual property rights and technology transfer to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. Additionally, she promotes collaborations and partnerships between the University and industry to further research, innovation and development. She has a proven record in policy development, strategy formulation, standard operating procedures, drafting, reviewing and negotiating of research contracts, material transfer agreements and other related agreements. Diana was a member of a consulting team that developed a framework for technology transfer in Ghana. She is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP), a member of the University of Ghana Intellectual Property Committee; and Co-chair of the African Sub \u2013 Committee of the International Strategy Committee of AUTM. She holds a Master of Arts Degree in Law for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and a Master of Philosophy Degree in Economics from the University of Ghana. Diana has also successfully completed the WIPO Academy Continuous Training Program for Trainers of Intellectual Property Training Institutions.<\/p>

Simon has been a research manager and administrator for over 30 years, now an independent research consultant he previously led the research office at the Universities of Kent and Sunderland.<\/p>

He has a passion for research management and administration (RMA) as a profession and leads the INORMS (International Network of Research Management Societies) RAAAP<\/a> (Research Administration as a Profession) Task Force that is collecting longitudinal data about the profession. \u00a0He was given the 2022 Innovation Award from CARA the Canadian Association of Research Administrators for his leadership on RAAAP. Beatrice Sakyibea Biney-Nyamekye (Research Management Professional \u2013 RMP), has over 11+ years experience supporting researchers in a university setting pursue funding for research and capacity building initiatives. Her work spans the research life cycle but has predominantly focused on the pre-award processes including finding funding for research, providing expert advice to researchers on responding to funding opportunity announcements and supporting the researchers to develop research proposals applications and submit applications for funding.<\/p>

She has specialist knowledge of the research lifecycle and experience with strategic research funding initiatives gathered from the departmental and central level grants management and she has contributed immensely to grants management capacity building programmes in the University of Ghana and beyond.
